Danny Lane says he has a pretty good idea of what he needs to do next year to win first place in the IDDBA’s Cake Decorating Challenge. Danny took second place in this year’s Challenge – a very good outcome for someone entering for the first time. He says his co-workers kept bugging him to enter the Challenge and, finally, he sent in his album and was a bit surprised when he was chosen.

“I really enjoyed it,” says Danny. “It was a lot of work, but I would definitely like to enter again. I’ve already started planning for next year!” Danny said the Challenge is definitely challenging, since the judges are looking very closely at details. “You have to create all these cakes and they have to be perfect,” says Danny, who decorated birthday, baby shower, graduation and wedding cakes during the three-day event.

Danny has been a professional cake decorator for 21 years, nine of them at Harps. The California native says that, when he became bakery manager, he had to learn all aspects of the bakery, including cake decorating. “I really liked the creativity that goes into cake decorating,” says Danny, who says his favorite cakes to decorate are wedding and groom’s cakes. “I like doing fancy, and I like that you can get some very different requests when it comes to groom’s cakes.”
