Featured Decorator Our current featured cake pro is: Hy-Vee Ames #1 Hy-Vee Ames #2 Ames Iowa When Iowa State University wanted a special cake to help celebrate its 150th anniversary, its representatives had a tough time finding a bakery that was up to the task. Until, that is, they found Hy-Vee, an employee-owned retail store based in the Midwest. Joel Fossum, Regional Chain Manager for Rich Products, suggested to Chris Arnold, Bakery Team Supervisor for Hy-Vee, that they partner to create this very special cake. “Rich’s and its Broker Partner, Hockenberg Newburgh, very much enjoy assisting Hy-Vee in the development of these types of cake projects,” says Fossum, who then nominated Hy-Vee for the Cake Pros® Spotlight. “They take a lot of time and teamwork, but it is very rewarding to everyone involved.” “Hy-Vee loves to support our communities; we feel very strongly about giving back to the people who support our stores,” added Chris Arnold. Mat Mattox, a cake designer at Hy-Vee store #2, did most of the planning and organizing for the project, which resulted in a spectacular 15-foot round, four-tiered stacked cake that fed 20,000 people. The stores used 150 full sheets and approximately 600 pounds of icing. Ninety percent of the cake was made of iced and decorated Styrofoam, but the bottom three layers consisted of iced sheet cakes complete with the ISU logo and other logos and decorations. The result was a huge hit with all those who tasted the creation (Hy-Vee employees also helped serve the cake), and our congratulations go out to all who participated.
