Featured Decorator Our current featured cake pro is: Gwen Kottmann Cake Decorator Phoenix, AZ Gwen has been decorating cakes professionally for more than 25 years, most recently at Fry’s Marketplace in Phoenix, where she worked until a few months ago. Today, she is teaching web design and graphic design at Collins College, but still keeps her fingers in the frosting whenever she can. Gwen’s husband is a professional pastry chef, so she helps him out whenever he gets extra busy. She was barely 12 when she started decorating cakes. Her grandparents owned a bakery and when her grandfather passed away, Gwen’s grandmother handed her a bowl of frosting, his pastry bags and a book and told her to "have at it!" Gwen loved it and found she had a knack for decorating cakes. Soon, she was baking and decorating cakes for neighbors to earn money while she went to school. "I love the creativity and the freedom of decorating pretty cakes," says Gwen. "I would have to say wedding cakes are my favorite cakes to decorate." Gwen said she chose a southwestern theme for her IDDBA cakes because "I know people back east love everything southwestern." Apparently, she was right, as her creations earned her second place in the IDDBA Cake Challenge last June. Congratulations Gwen!
