

The theme for the International Dairy•Deli•Bakery Association's™ (IDDBA) thirteenth annual Cake Decorating Challenge, held at the Dairy-Deli-Bake 2008 seminar and expo in New Orleans, LA, June 1-3, was Super Mardi Gras. Forty-four entrants from 22 supermarket chains took part in the three phases of the Challenge: on Sunday, each contestant decorated a wedding cake. On Monday, each contestant decorated enough cakes to fill one multi-tiered, eight-foot bakery case. On Tuesday, each contestant decorated three cakes of his or her choosing, one from each category: special occasion, theme/event, and decorator's interpretation of the Mardi Gras theme.
Congratulations to RJonathan Armistead, Hy-Vee Inc., Columbia, Missouri, who was the top prize winner. Second place went to Doris Irias Varela, Publix Super Markets Inc., Miami, Florida. The third place winner was Trish Horsley, Price Cutter Supermarkets, Poteau, Oklahoma. Rich's® Jim Caliendo proudly served as one of the judges, and Rich's® was happy to provide cakes, cake boards, and icing for the event.
