Growing up, Heather Hammer wanted to be a nurse and got as far as enrolling in a college nursing program. But, at the same time, she was working at a local restaurant in Buffalo, NY and soon realized she enjoyed that environment much more than nursing. Heather grew up around food preparation, as her family owned a catering business. She realized she really enjoyed baking and making different desserts and decided that that was the career she wanted to pursue. Before coming to Dessert Builders about two years ago, Heather worked as a pastry chef at several local restaurants.

She says she enjoys the creative freedom that comes with making cakes, and loves the diversity that comes with working at Dessert Builders, which specializes in all types of cakes, from wedding to birthday to special occasion and catered affairs. Heather’s favorite cake to make? “I really enjoy the challenge of making wedding cakes,” she says.

Heather enjoys adding her own flair to the cakes she makes, and says the cakes she brings to parties are always a hit. Her advice to other cake decorators? “Always let yourself be creative and have fun with the cakes you make!”
