Stacy A. Wade Stacy took first prize in the 10th annual three-day IDDBA Cake Decorating Challenge in Minneapolis in June (see the article in the Summer 2005 issue of Cake Prose). Stacy and the second- and third-place winners (who will be spotlighted in upcoming months) beat out more than 60 contestants to be selected to compete at the Challenge. Rich Products was a corporate sponsor of the event, providing the cakes, cake boards and frosting for the event. Jim Caliendo, national training specialist for Rich Products Corporation, was one of the judges, along with Luke Bender, technical sales representative, Maplehurst Bakeries, Inc. The event featured three days of non-stop decorating. On Sunday, June 5, each contestant decorated a wedding cake. On Monday, June 6, each contestant decorated enough cakes to fill one bakery case. On Tuesday, June 7, each contestant decorated three cakes of her choosing from each category: special occasion; theme/event; and decorator’s interpretation of the IDDBA’s Dairy-Deli-Bake show theme – “Speak Easy.” “All of our entrants showed a real flair for decorating, but Stacy’s work stood out as being very creative and very customer-friendly,” says Jim Caliendo. Stacy has been a professional cake decorator for eight years, five of it at Lamb’s. She says she enjoys the creativity that comes with decorating cakes and doing unique, sculpted cakes for customers. Though she found entering the IDDBA contest a bit stressful, she was surprised and delighted when she found out she’d won. “I enjoyed the challenge of entering the contest,” says Stacy. “I was very happy that my efforts paid off, though I didn’t expect to win.” If you would like a chance to be in the Cake Pros® Spotlight, please complete the |
